Undue Medical Debt

Undue Medical Debt is a nonprofit whose purpose is to strengthen communities by erasing financially burdensome medical debt. We have driven widespread awareness about Undue with over 11 billion earned media impressions, resulting in two surprise, unrestricted $50 and $30 million grants from philanthropist Mackenzie Scott.

Case Study

ABOUT UNDUE MEDICAL DEBT

Medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy in the U.S. More than that, medical debt is a debt of necessity; no one should be financially ruined because they gave birth, have a chronic condition or were in an accident.

America is a standout among developed nations and Undue exists to rebalance the equation and provide relief to those suffering in silence. Undue’s model mimics for-profit debt buyers by using fundraised dollars to purchase medical debts for those who are 400 percent or below the federal poverty level. Once the debt is acquired Undue notifies thousands of people that they are free of this burden.

As Undue’s agency of record since 2017, we have secured earned media in virtually every major national publication and also oversaw a highly effective local market strategy to explain the injustices of medical debt in communities around the country.

Relying almost exclusively on earned media for donations, in December of 2019 RIP abolished its first billion dollars of medical debt. In 2024,  it reached $14 billion, helping over 9.3 million people.

Thanks to Undue’s robust and successful earned media, philanthropist MacKenzie Scott awarded Undue a $50 million in 2020 and $30 million in 2022 in recognition of its vital work.
